Rules & Event Info

Everything you need on the day

Matches follow the official IBJJF ruleset. Below is what makes the English Open different - refunds, weigh-ins, gi requirements, medals - plus a quick scoring summary and the full rulebook PDF.

English Open - event info

Matches follow IBJJF rules. The organisers reserve the right to refuse entry. The respect rule applies to competitors, coaches and spectators alike - repeated breaches may result in removal from the event.

Divisions

Juvenile, Adult and Masters 1–7 divisions across white, blue, purple, brown and black belts.

Brackets & medals

Round-robin for divisions of 3 or fewer competitors. Single-elimination with a bronze-medal match for everyone else.

Medals: Gold, silver and a single bronze per division - the bronze is decided by a third-place play-off between the two losing semi-finalists. We do NOT award joint bronze.

Absolute (open weight)

Absolute (open weight) divisions are open only to medallists. Registration takes place on the day after weight-division medals are awarded. No absolutes for juniors or juveniles.

On the day

Weigh-ins, gis & division changes

  • Weigh-ins: Weigh-ins happen on the day you fight, just before your first match. Competitors weigh in with their gi and belt on. Failure to make weight is a DQ - no division change at that point.
  • Gi: Gis must be correctly sized to IBJJF spec: 4 fingers of space inside the cuff of sleeves and trousers, and no more than 4 fingers between the hand and the gi sleeve, or the ankle and the gi trouser. Jacket and trousers must be colour-matched but can be any single colour. Unsuitable gis must be replaced or the competitor is disqualified.
  • Empty division: If you are the only registration in a category once registration has closed, you may move division or take a full refund.
  • Moving divisions: It is the competitor's responsibility to move divisions. The organiser is not responsible for matchmaking if your division is empty, but may make changes if they see fit and you have given permission.

Refunds

Full refunds are issued automatically for withdrawals before midnight on the published refund deadline. After that, organiser-issued refunds carry a £20 admin fee covering staff time and PayPal charges.

T-shirts & team trophies

All competitors receive a free event T-shirt - pick your size during registration.

Top three academies by team points receive team trophies.

Coaches, parking & spectators

Coaching: Coaching passes must be arranged in advance - minimum 5 competitors per pass. There is no matside coaching during fights.

Parking: Free car parking is available behind the venue.

Spectators: Spectator entry is £10 per person, payable on the day.

Scoring & match length

Points for positional control and advancement. Whoever has more points (then advantages, then referee decision) when the clock hits zero wins - unless the match ends earlier by submission or DQ.
